Who Is Freyja?

Lady of the Vanir, Weaver of Fate, and the Most Beautiful of Them All

In the frost-kissed lands of the North, where auroras dance like shimmering veils and the wind hums old songs through the fjords, Freyja rides her chariot pulled by two giant cats, cloaked in falcon feathers and dripping with gold. Wherever she goes, wild roses bloom and warriors bow their heads—not out of fear, but out of awe.

Freyja is not just a goddess. She is a force.
A spell.
A mystery made flesh.

Freyja (sometimes spelled Freya) is one of the most beloved and powerful goddesses in Norse mythology. She belongs to the Vanir tribe of deities—gods and goddesses of nature, fertility, and magic—though she later lived among the Aesir (Odin, Thor, Frigg, and others) as part of a truce between the two divine clans.

She is the goddess of love, beauty, fertility, war, death, and seiðr, a form of Norse magic. She teaches women and witches how to weave fate, how to reclaim pleasure, and how to rise like fire from heartbreak.

Freyja is not a dainty love goddess tucked in rose petals. She is passion and ferocity wrapped in silk and steel. She weeps tears of red gold and rides into battle beside shieldmaidens.

Her Symbols and Sacred Animals

  • Cats – Two majestic cats pull her chariot; they represent sensuality, independence, and cunning.

  • Boar (Hildisvíni) – A golden-bristled boar said to be her disguised human lover.

  • Hawk or Falcon Cloak – Allows her to shapeshift and fly between realms.

  • Brísingamen – A shimmering gold necklace made by dwarves, radiant with divine power.

  • Amber – Her tears solidify into drops of amber, especially those shed for her lost husband.

  • The Rune Fehu (ᚠ) – Symbolizing wealth, fertility, and divine feminine fire.

The Legend of Freyja and the Brísingamen Necklace

One misty twilight, Freyja wandered into the deep hollows of the earth, where the cunning dwarves—master smiths and weavers of wonders—crafted treasures no god could match.

There, in a hidden forge of flame and gem, she saw it:
Brísingamen—a necklace of glowing gold, dripping with beauty so profound it made even her heart ache. She had to have it.

The four dwarves, each named for a secret star, agreed to part with the necklace—but only if Freyja would spend a night with each of them.

And so, for four nights, she wove desire and enchantment among them, each night more powerful than the last. When the final ember cooled, the necklace was hers.

But her desire came at a cost. Loki, the trickster god, discovered the secret and whispered it to Odin. As punishment, Odin demanded Freyja stir strife in the human world—to send warriors to war, so that half their souls might come to her hall, Sessrúmnir, in Fólkvangr.

And so it was. While Odin took the slain to Valhalla, Freyja took the rest to her field of wildflowers and stars.

Even in sorrow, she found her power.

Queen of the Fallen and Mistress of Magick

What many don’t realize is that Freyja is also a war goddess. She walks among warriors on the battlefield, choosing the brave to come to her after death. But she doesn’t choose only those who win—she chooses those who fight for what they believe in.

As the first to teach seiðr magic to the Aesir, Freyja is also the mother of Norse witchcraft. Her magic bends fate, reveals visions, and allows a practitioner to send their spirit into other realms. She was a seer, a shapeshifter, and the embodiment of sacred sexuality.

Final Whispers from the Lady of Amber

Freyja doesn’t wait for permission. She doesn’t soften her edges for comfort.

She arrives in a cloak of feathers, with a heart full of magic, and says,

“You are worthy. Now rise.”

And you do.

You rise.

“I am Freyja,
Lover and warrior,
Witch and queen.
I wear gold tears and command the storm.
I am yours—if you are ready to be mine.”
