Pomegranate in Myth & Lore
Fruit of the Underworld, Jewel of Fertility, and Keeper of Divine Secrets
Once upon a time, in the heart of a golden orchard kissed by both sunlight and shadow, there hung a fruit unlike any other. With a thick red rind hiding hundreds of gleaming, blood-red seeds, the Pomegranate has enchanted goddesses, mystics, and witches since the dawn of time.
It is a fruit of paradox — both life and death, sweetness and sorrow, birth and becoming. Sacred to Persephone and symbolic of powerful feminine energy, the pomegranate is more than a delicious fruit — it is a spell wrapped in crimson skin.

In Greek mythology, the pomegranate is famously tied to the tale of Persephone, Queen of the Underworld. When she was taken into the shadow realm by Hades, she ate six pomegranate seeds, binding her to return to the underworld each year — thus creating the cycle of the seasons.
To the ancient Egyptians, pomegranates were a symbol of life after death. In Persia, they represented eternal life and divine beauty. In Jewish tradition, it is said there are 613 seeds — the same number as commandments in the Torah.
The pomegranate holds the kind of magic that feels old and sacred, as if each seed contains a whisper from another world.
Magical Properties of Pomegranate
1. Fertility & Divine Feminine Energy
With its seed-filled womb-like shape, the pomegranate is a potent symbol of fertility, creation, and feminine power. In many cultures, it has been offered in marriage rituals, goddess worship, and rites of passage into womanhood.
Witch’s Tip:
Place a pomegranate on your altar during fertility spells, new moon rituals, or any time you want to birth a new idea, path, or version of yourself.
2. Death, Rebirth & the Underworld
Because of its connection to Persephone, the pomegranate is a guide through cycles of transformation, shadow work, and spiritual rebirth. It teaches us to honor endings as sacred beginnings.
Spell Idea:
Write what you’re ready to release on a slip of paper. Anoint it with pomegranate juice and bury it beneath a tree. Whisper a farewell and make space for the new.
